Master the Traffic:
A Guide to Oslo's Toughest Intersections and Roundabouts
We will explore four of the most challenging intersections and roundabouts in Oslo. These intersections are perfect for practicing to truly master driver training. You just need to keep a cool head, pay close attention, and stay calm. Once you've mastered these intersections, other roundabouts in Norway will seem like a breeze.
We start with the notorious Sinsen and Ryen roundabouts. With their complex structure and high traffic volume, these can seem overwhelming, especially for new drivers. They are large and complex intersections where several major roads meet, featuring multiple lanes, entry and exit ramps that require careful navigation. These roundabouts handle a mix of personal cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles. This mix of vehicle types, with varying sizes and speed capacities, can make navigation more complicated, and traffic density can dramatically increase during rush hours.
Next on the list are Carl Berner and Storo intersections. These can be even more challenging than Ryen and Sinsen due to several complex factors. The areas are densely populated with shops and residences, leading to frequent pedestrian crossings. They are also major public transport hubs with several bus and tram lines, as well as subway lines, which contribute to increased traffic and require extra attention from drivers. In the Carl Berner intersection, there are also often many cyclists. You can expect cyclists from all directions, and it wouldn't surprise us if a cyclist popped up from under the car as well. Construction work is a constant factor here, and if you are not familiar with the area, the intersections can seem confusing.

To safely navigate these four locations, it is important to be prepared, attentive, and patient, especially during rush hour or if you are unfamiliar with the area. Therefore, we have put together some tips to help you master these challenges.
Driving Tips for Roundabouts and Intersections
  • Predict the unpredictable:
In these kinds of situations, where anything can happen, the best thing you can do is to be alert and know that the unexpected can happen at any time. Your reaction time could mean the difference between life and death. Try to be one step ahead.

  • Reduce speed and maintain the correct lane:
Look for signs and road markings to choose the correct lane before you approach roundabouts and intersections. Especially in multi-lane roundabouts, make sure to be in the correct lane for your exit.

  • Use turn signals:
In roundabouts, signal left if you are turning left or going around, and right if you are turning right or exiting the roundabout. At intersections, signal well before turning to inform other road users of your intentions.

  • Yield:
In roundabouts, incoming traffic usually has to yield to vehicles already in the roundabout. At intersections, follow the yield rules, which can vary depending on the signage.

  • Be attentive and predictable:
Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, who can be hard to see in busy areas. Maintain a steady speed, avoid sudden maneuvers, and be clear about your driving actions.
By following these tips, you can navigate safely and efficiently through both roundabouts and intersections. These areas can be challenging, but they also offer a great opportunity to practice complex traffic situations. Think of this as the perfect training ground to become a skilled driver.

Our best tip is to drive through these intersections multiple times during your driver training so that you become comfortable with handling large and challenging roundabouts and intersections.
