You just need to keep a cool head, pay close attention, and stay calm. Once you've mastered these intersections, other roundabouts in Norway will seem like a breeze.
We start with the notorious Sinsen and Ryen roundabouts. With their complex structure and high traffic volume, these can seem overwhelming, especially for new drivers. They are large and complex intersections where several major roads meet, featuring multiple lanes, entry and exit ramps that require careful navigation. These roundabouts handle a mix of personal cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles. This mix of vehicle types, with varying sizes and speed capacities, can make navigation more complicated, and traffic density can dramatically increase during rush hours.

In these kinds of situations, where anything can happen, the best thing you can do is to be alert and know that the unexpected can happen at any time. Your reaction time could mean the difference between life and death. Try to be one step ahead.

Look for signs and road markings to choose the correct lane before you approach roundabouts and intersections. Especially in multi-lane roundabouts, make sure to be in the correct lane for your exit.

  • Use turn signals:
In roundabouts, signal left if you are turning left or going around, and right if you are turning right or exiting the roundabout. At intersections, signal well before turning to inform other road users of your intentions.

  • Yield:
In roundabouts, incoming traffic usually has to yield to vehicles already in the roundabout. At intersections, follow the yield rules, which can vary depending on the signage.

  • Be attentive and predictable:
Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, who can be hard to see in busy areas. Maintain a steady speed, avoid sudden maneuvers, and be clear about your driving actions.
